Please perform the following steps before running Hum:

Freeing up Program Memory

1. Close the applications that you are not currently using to give Hum more CPU power:

Go to Start->Settings->System and click on the Task Manager Tab.

Select the task that you are not currently using then click the End Task button. Repeat until all unused tasks are closed

Click the OK button.

2. To increase the Program Memory setting on your device:

Go to Start->Settings->System and click on the Memory Tab.

Check to see if you have enough Program Memory available.

If not, adjust the slider so that you have around 1000KB of unused Program Memory.

Starting Hum

After you have performed the above adjustments, go to Start->Programs->Utopiasoft Hum.

Taskbar Icon

To switch to Hum while running other applications, tap the Hum logo on the Taskbar.

Copying MP3 files from your PC to your device

Firstly, establish connection between your portable device and your PC. Due to the restriction imposed by Windows CE, to play your MP3 or WAV files, please use Windows CE Explorer to copy the files to one of the "My Documents" directories or immediate subdirectories.

For example: (on your HPC/PPC)

A. In Storage Memory:

\My Documents\Hum\

B. In Storage Card

\Storage Card\My Documents\Hum

Or similar directories in localized versions of Windows CE. .

Due to the fact that the connection between your portable device and desktop PC is slow, it may take a long time to copy even one audio file. Therefore, it is recommend that you use a notebook PC or a CompactFlash(tm) adapter connected to your PC to copy the files directly on to the Storage Card.

NB: MP3 files MUST be stored under one of the "My Documents" directories, or one of their immediate subdirectories, otherwise they will not be detected by Hum. Eg if you store an MP3 in the directory "\MP3s\" or in the directory "\My Documents\Hum\Music\" then Hum will not detect the MP3.

Adding/Deleting tracks

1. Establish a connection between your portable device and your desktop PC.

2. Double click on the Mobile Devices icon on your desktop PC.

3. Use Windows CE Explorer to copy or delete MP3 or WAV files in the MP3 folders.

Playlists

Making a new playlist

If running from a storage card, make sure it is inserted before you start Hum.

1. If you choose to store on your device, the playlist file will be saved in the "\My Documents\Hum" directory.

You can manually move your playlist to other directories after their creation. (NB: Playlist files MUST be stored under one of the "My Documents" directories, or one of their immediate subdirectories, otherwise they will not be detected by Hum. Eg if you store a playlist file in the directory "\playlists\" or in the directory "\My Documents\Hum\lists\" then Hum will not detect the playlist file.)

4. By tapping on Add, you can choose the tracks you want in your playlist.

5. So if it has enough available processing power to decode a 44kHz, stereo MPEG file in real time, then Hum will play high quality stereo music.

Adjusting sound quality

Go to Options->Quality.

Select your desired output quality (High=44kHz, Medium=22kHz, Low=11kHz).

Toggling Mono/Stereo output

Go to Options->Channel and click on either Mono or Stereo.

AdaptivePlay

AdaptivePlay status

AdaptivePlay monitors the CPU activities of your device and optimizes the music quality according to CPU load. AdaptivePlay Status indicates the number of decoded music buffers ready to play. If the number remains low and the music starts to break up, please refer to Freeing up Program Memory section and make all necessary adjustments.

Adjusting AdaptivePlay settings

Go to Options->AdaptPlay... .

Click on the "AdaptivePlay Enabled" checkbox to turn AdaptivePlay on or off. (We strongly recommend leaving AdaptivePlay on.)

Click on the "Warning on Degrading" checkbox if you wish to be warned when AdaptivePlay has been forced to compensate for when the CPU has had an excessive load for more than three tracks.

Adjusting the "Fail Time" setting alters the time that AdaptivePlay takes before making adjustments to compensate when the CPU has an excessive load.

Power Settings

Adjusting Power Settings

Click on Options->Power... .

Checking the "Stay Awake while playing (until Power is Low)" box will prevent your device from turning off automatically, unless low power is reached.

Under the "Stop Playing when..." box there are two checkboxes:

If you check "Power becomes Low," Hum will stop playing when the power becomes low. However, if you hit the play button again it will start playing again.

If you check "Power is Low," Hum will stop playing when the power becomes low. It will prevent continual playback as long as the power is low.

The "Low Power Definition" tells Hum what to consider low power. Changing it alters the time the other power settings take place.

Skin Files

Where can I download Hum skin files?

Skin files for all screen sizes can be downloaded from the Utopiasoft web site at, http://www.utopiasoft.com/skin

Installing a new skin

You will notice that when you install Hum, a Skin directory will be created.
